8 July 2013 Victory in Middleton Cup plus other news
Norfolk remain on course to defend
their Middleton Cup title following a convincing win over Bedfordshire at
Norfolk BC on Saturday. Going into the match needing the full 22 points at
stake to guarantee a quarter final place the county achieved this winning the
match 138 shots to 83.
Norfolk started the match strongly
opening up an early lead which was extended to 33 shots at the 10 end stage. At
this point the overall win looked in the bag and all that was needed was for
all the rinks to win. This was duly achieved with Darren Rowsells and Philip
Barrs rinks overcoming small deficits in the closing ends.
The star performances for Norfolk
came from the rink skipped by Andy Siely who scored an emphatic victory by 26-6
closely followed by Wayne Willgress who returned at 27-10 cards.
In the quarter finals Norfolk meet
old rivals Essex on Saturday 20th July at a neutral venue that has
still to be decided and not surprisingly Manager Brian Taylor has named an
unchanged team.

John Colcombe and Andy Siely of Acle

field.
The triples feature Chris Ward of
North Walsham a past multi national title winner, triples including father and
son Vernon & Justin Hudson of Wootton Park together with the defending
champions Charles West, Chris Willgress & Wayne Willgress.
Justin Hudson is also in the fours
in a strong combination that includes Mervyn King, Stephen Winter & Tom

The quarter finals on the Bales Cup have
been held. Holders County Arts went out to Downham Market in a tight match
whilst Acle St Edmund overcame a spirited Upwell team. The other quarter finals
saw an all Premier League clash where Norfolk BC proved too strong for
Wymondham Dell whilst Thorpe Recreation overcame Ashill.
The semi finals to be played on
Friday 5th July at venues still to be decided are:-
Norfolk BC -v- Thorpe Recreation
Downham Market -v- Acle St Edmund
Norfolk bowed out of the Balcomb
Trophy to Essex in disappointing fashion in the regional semi final played St
Neots BC. Having taken an early lead on both rinks, the outcome of the match
was ultimately decided on the rink skipped by Wayne Willgress. Having taken a
10 shot lead the Essex combination skipped by England International Steve
Mitchinson hit back strongly to overcome this deficit and a last end 6 shots
for the Essex rink proved too much for the other Norfolk rink skipped by Peter
Boldero to recover and Norfolk went down by 5 shots despite Bolderos rink
getting home by 5 shots.

18 June 2013 Victory in Middleton Cup against Northants
but defeat in White Rose Trophy
Norfolk are still on course to
defend their Middleton Cup title following victory over Northamptonshire at
Kingsthorpe BC on Saturday by 117 shots to 113. Norfolk won on three rinks to take
16 of the 22 points at stake. With Huntingdonshire beating Bedfordshire and
taking 21 points in the other group match, qualification from the group to the
quarter finals is set for a thrilling finale when the final matches are played
on 6th July. In these matches Norfolk entertain Bedfordshire at
Norfolk BC whilst Northamptonshire play Huntingdon at Kingsthorpe. Currently
Norfolk top the group on 30 points followed by Huntingdonshire on 29 and
Northamptonshire on 28.
At Kingsthorpe on Saturday Norfolk
knew that a win was imperative and opened the match on dominant fashion to open
up an early lead. The expected Northamptonshire recovery came and they moved
into the lead going into the closing stages but Norfolk hit back to snatch the
lead to win by a narrow margin. Once again the rink skipped by Downham Markets
Peter Boldero were the star performers winning by 12 shots with other rink wins
coming from those skipped by Philip Barr
& Wayne Willgress.
Team Manager Brian Taylor said after
the match We put in an excellent performance across the green & I thought
we fully deserved our victory. We now top the group but its very tight but
will not underestimate Bedfordshire in our last match and if we perform as we
have done theres no reason why we should not reach the quarter finals again

There was disappointment for
Norfolks young bowlers in the regional finals of the White Rose trophy when
they lost to Huntingdonshire by a single shot in the semi finals held at
Maulden BC. Huntingdonshire were in control throughout and Norfolk battled hard
to reduce the deficit only to lose out on the final end. In the regional final
Huntingdonshire beat Leicestershire to reach the National finals to be played
at Worthing in August.

10 June 2013 Win in Balcomb Trophy + Middleton Cup
selection & other news
On Saturday Norfolk travel to
Kingsthorpe BC to play Northamptonshire in their second group match in the
Middleton Cup. With both sides having won their opening matches it is likely
that this match will decide group honours and a place in the quarter finals.
However a big win in for
Huntingdonshire in the other group match against Bedfordshire could put them in
the running. For Norfolk though it really is a must win match and with Mervyn
King have declared himself unavailable the Norfolk side shows some changes from
their last outing with both Darren Rowsell and Philip Barr back in the team.

With last weekends matches against
Hertfordshire & Suffolk in the Eastern Counties Under 30 League having been
cancelled, Norfolk now have to wait until 23rd June for their
opening matches at Brampton Institute BC with Manager Daniel Noble having
selected the following for both matches against Huntingdonshire at 10.00am
followed by Bedfordshire at 2.00pm
Tom Baker, Matt Carter, Liam
Stevenson & Marcus Colcombe
Max Harrison, Dean Rudling, Daniel
Noble & Rick Summers
Jack Wells, Jack Adcock, Matt

Norfolk have progressed to regional
finals of the Balcombe Trophy (National Inter County Two Fours) with a hard
fought victory over Hertfordshire at the Rosedale BC in Cheshunt. Norfolk made
a good start but then had to withstand a strong recovery but Norfolk recovered
from this and by winning the closing 6 ends by 18 shots against 3 ran out
winners by 48 shots to 36. The same team has been selected for the regional
finals that will be held at St. Neots BC on Sunday 23rd June.

In the Eastern Counties League
Norfolk secured their second successive victory by beating Essex 120-109 at the
County Arts club taking 17 of the 22 points at stake. The win puts Norfolk
second in the table with 2 wins out of 2 behind leaders Hertfordshire who have
won all their four matches.
02 June 2013 Victory in opening Middleton Cup plus Balcomb
Trophy selection
Norfolk opened their defence of the Middleton
Cup with victory over Huntingdonshire at the Parkway BC in Peterborough on
Saturday. The county won by 119-111 taking 14 of the 22 points at stake. In the
other group game Northamptonshire overwhelmed Bedfordshire by 130 to 94 taking
all 22 points.
In their next game on 15th
June Norfolk travel to Northamptonshire in what looks like a winner takes all
for group honours and qualification for the quarter finals.
Norfolk travelled to Huntingdonshire
with a poor record on the Parkway green but started strongly opening up a 23
shot lead at the 5 end stage, a lead which they maintained over the middle
period of the match. Huntingdonshire hit back strongly over the closing stages
with a one stage the lead down to only 2 shots. However Norfolk held firm over
the closing ends to secure victory, thanks mainly to a dominant performance by
Peter Bolderos rink who returned a fine 30 shots to 11 winning score.
After the match Manager Brian Taylor
said In the past we have never done particularly well here but today we played
well across the green and deserved the victory. We play Northants next, who are
a bit of an unknown quantity to us but with their big win today we know it will
be a tough match but Im sure we have the players to go there and win

On Saturday Norfolk begin their
defence of the Middleton Cup when they travel to Parkway BC in Peterborough to
play Huntingdonshire. Matches against Huntingdonshire are always competitive
and as this match is followed by a further away trip to Northamptonshire and

vital if Norfolk are to progress to the quarter final stages

plus other news
Norfolk had a winning start to the their
outdoor season at the weekend with matches against Huntingdonshire in the
Eastern Counties League, which was treated as a trial for the Middleton Cup and
then a trial match against Essex.
In the match against Huntingdonshire at
Brampton Institute Norfolk won 130-106 and by winning on five rinks took 20 of
the 22 points at stake. The stand out performance was the rink skipped by Ian
Catchpole of Norfolk BC, on his County debut having previously represented, Suffolk
who returned a score of 35-13. Stephen Winters rink had a 10 shot victory and
there were also other rink wins for Andy
Siely, Darren Rowsell and the Executive rink skipped by Tony Dunton.
The match against Essex was a tight
affair with Norfolk putting in a strong finish to win the match 108-105 and

After the 2 matches Brian Taylor said Even
though its early in the season and there is nearly a month until we begin our
defence of the Middleton Cup the weekend gave a good opportunity to take a look
at both the established players and those looking to break into the team. Both
matches gave us run outs against two competitive teams and it was good to get
the winning results
Having lost in the final of the White Rose
Trophy last year, and with most of last years squad still eligible Norfolks
young bowlers hope to go one better this year and begin with a match against
Hertfordshire at Royston on 12th May. Team Manager Daniel Noble has
selected the following team:-
John Tufts, Liam Stevenson, Ian
Catchpole & Wayne Willgress
Max Harrison, Ollie Allen, Sam King
