02 August 2014 Middleton
Cup news
Norfolk’s hopes of regaining the Middleton Cup ended on Saturday when they lost in the final at Victoria Park Leamington Spa to Hampshire by 127 shots to 106.
The final was played in periods of heavy rain with play interrupted on two occasions due to the green being underwater. The initial ends were played in fine weather with the scores even but as the rain set in Hampshire took control to open a commanding lead. Following the second interruption with Hampshire leading by 15 shots, it was Hampshire who dealt better with the conditions to quickly double their advantage and from that point Norfolk was never really in the contest and Hampshire ran out thoroughly deserving winners.
Earlier in the day in the semi final Norfolk overcame old rivals Cumbria 119-110 in a match again affected by heavy rain whilst Hampshire overwhelmed Wiltshire 136-89.
For Norfolk it was a disappointing end to an otherwise excellent campaign with several new players blooded into the team which augurs well for the future. Norfolk will now look to end the season on a high note in the Eastern Counties League where victory in their final match against Suffolk at RG Carter BC on Saturday 23rd August will see them lift the title.

22 July 2014 County
Championship results
The County Championship finals were a personal triumph for Norfolk BC’s Wayne Willgress when he lifted three titles, the Singles, Two Wood Singles & Fours.
In the blue riband Singles final he met Brian Taylor of County Arts and after an even start Willgress pulled away to win comprehensively 21-7 to regain the title he last won in 2010.
For Taylor the singles defeat was a double disappointment for earlier in the day along with partners Gary Mallett, Malcolm Nicholson & Philip Barr he lost in the Fours final in dramatic fashion to Willgress and his partners John Tufts, Neil Moulton & Ian Catchpole. The Norfolk BC quartet looked to be in control by taking a 13-6 lead but County Arts hit back to lead by 2 shots going into the final end. Willgress forced and extra end with his last bowl and then on took the crucial shot & title on the extra end.
There was no such drama in the Triples final where Liam Stevenson’s Wootton Park trio took the title with victory over Peter Boldero’s Downham Market threesome 27-9. Following a rain delay at 9 ends with Wootton Park leading 16-5, Downham Market scored four shots on the first end following the resumption to give them hope of a recovery but they could not maintain this and Wootton went on to take the title.
The Two wood Singles final saw the holder Ian Muir of Diss & District play the 2012 winner Wayne Willgress and with Willgress taking the form from his earlier finals claimed the title with a 17-8 victory.
The Under 25 Singles final was an all Norfolk BC affair with Jake Willgress, brother of Wayne, taking on John Tufts and it was Willgress who prevailed taking the title 21-13.
Due to duplications the Pairs Final between Max Harrison & Peter Boldero (Downham Market) and John Tufts & Wayne Willgress (Norfolk BC) has been re-scheduled and will now be played on Monday 28th July at Swaffham Town starting at 6.00pm
The winners and runners up of all the Championships go forward to the Bowls England National Championships at Victoria Park Royal Leamington Spa in August. Details of all matches may be found on the Bowls England website www.bowlsengland.com.

Cup victory & Bales Cup news
Norfolk stormed into the semi finals of the Middleton Cup with an emphatic victory over Essex at Sudbury BC on Saturday. Having lost to Essex at the same stage last year Norfolk expected a tough encounter but a strong start saw them open up a 23 shot lead at 5 ends, a lead they maintained throughout the match to run out winners by 128 shots to 96.
Norfolk won on five of the six rinks and was only denied a whitewash by the other rink going down on the last couple of ends. Top rink was that skipped by County Arts Philip Barr who beat current England International Steve Mitchinson 27-13.
Having made changes to the team that got through the group stage Manager Brian Taylor said after the match “The changes we made worked very well and the team put on a great performance over all the rinks and we thoroughly deserved the victory and can now look forward once again to another semi final”
In the semi final, to be played at Victoria Park Royal Leamington Spa on 2nd August Norfolk, meet old rivals Cumbria whilst the other semi final sees Hampshire play Wiltshire, who Norfolk beat in the final the last time they lifted the trophy in 2012. 15 June 2014 Norfolk’s
Middleton Cup & White Rose report
Norfolk’s bowlers scored an excellent double over the weekend with victory over Northamptonshire in the Middleton Cup on Saturday and then on Sunday their young bowlers won through the regional finals of the White Rose Trophy and thereby qualified for the National Finals to be held in August.
In the Middleton Cup victory over Northamptonshire was achieved by 112 shots to 101 with the County taking 16 of the 22 points at stake. With Bedfordshire beating Huntingdonshire 18-4 in the other group match Norfolk now head the group going into the final match against Bedfordshire in July. Norfolk has a 5 point advantage over Bedfordshire so the final match will be a winner take all for a place in the quarter final.
Norfolk began the match against Northamptonshire in confident fashion opening up a 10 shot lead at the 5 end stage. Northamptonshire then hit back to take the lead at the halfway stage. From that point the lead changed hands several times before Norfolk took control over the closing few ends to take the victory. Once again the star performance came from the rink skipped by Peter Boldero who beat Jim McKee by 19 shots, with other rink wins coming from those skipped by Wayne Willgress and Andy Siely.

We started & ended the match very well and the win puts us in a strong position but we still need to win our final match against a resurgent Bedfordshire team to progress”

Attention now switches to the Middleton
Cup where Norfolk entertain Huntingdonshire in their opening group match at
Norfolk Bowling Club next Saturday starting at 2pm.
With matches to follow against
Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire Norfolk will be looking for a victory to set
them on their way to a possible quarter final appearance. The team shows a few
changes to that which lost disappointingly to Essex in the quarter finals last
year and manager Brian Taylor said "our matches in the past against
Huntingdonshire have always been hard and I’m expecting nothing different this
time. We have home advantage and have a good record at Norfolk Bowling Club and
I’m confident the team will get the victory which will set us nicely for our
other matches”
